RYE InformationEligibility (Outbound): To participate in the RYE Programme, applicants must:
Application: Admission to the programme is not by application alone. The selection process for outbound students consists of interviews and some may include students and parents. This takes place at a selection process normally held in Christchurch & Nelson in May. RYE students will be sponsored by a Rotary Club. You must maintain contact with the club during your exchange. Between selection and departure students participate in an orientation programme(s) preparing students for their year away. An exchange is not assured until the student has been accepted by a hosting overseas Rotary Club (which can take until October). The hosting club will appoint a counsellor and three to four host families for the duration of the exchange. The vast Rotary network provides support, friends and many varied opportunities throughout and beyond the exchange year. Please now download and complete the Initial Application form. Sponsoring Outbound NZ Students DUTY OF INBOUNDS: DUTY OF OUTBOUNDS (Prior to departure): DUTY OF OUTBOUNDS (Whilst Overseas): DUTY OF OUTBOUNDS (When returned):
Sponsoring Outbound NZ students Applications close in May for students ( preferably 16 - 17.5 years ) intending to exchange for 12 months in January of the following year. A club may propose a student but final selection is conducted by the district committee over 3 orientations. Once approved they must obtain sponsorship from a club. Club sponsorship of $950.00 is levied to cover the costs 3 orientations, travel to meetings, blazer, calling cards and administration. A club counsellor is appointed mainly to establish communication between the club and student over the 12 months. The district committee undertake all arrangements for travel, insurance, safety issues and finding international districts prepared to host. The cost to families of students on exchange is currently around $13,000-$17,000 (this will vary depending on a number of factors). Final destination is reliant on our obligations to honour reciprocal exchanges. Inbound International Students Rotary exchange students are aged from 15.5-18 years and must attend school while in NZ. They come for 12 months (July from northern hemisphere and January from southern hemisphere countries) and are ideally hosted by 3-4 families. The club must also appoint a counsellor. Age of hosts has not been a problem as the situation may replicate the parent/grandparent roles they enjoy at home. It is unimportant whether or not host families include children as some are from an only child situation or can find peer pressure if there is an assumption of more favoured attendance. Non Rotarian families may be involved and in some instances parents of returned NZ students welcome a hosting role. Married children of our older Rotarians may also value the cultural experience. Don't just make a committee decision. Please discuss it with all club members and let them ask at home. We also have had shared club experiences providing the school is still convenient. The costs to the club include $650.00 initial cost for student attendance at district events such as conference, orientation meetings and district administration. The club must provide personal spending money of around $100 per month. It must also pay for the student meals when they attend club meetings. Attendance is variable as they have school and district events and have organised tours and travel with club members. Reimbursement for host families is at the club's discretion. School uniforms are the responsibility of the student. (club deposit $650, spending money $120 x 12 months, approx 30-40 club meetings @ $15.00 and this totals about $2,500 but spread over the 18 month period). Support by club members for events, outings, fundraisers, and meals can lessen the burden on the host families and provide a more intimate exchange of cultural and social behaviour across the membership. Most students readily involve themselves with school activities and sport and can become relatively independent. Remember even the most simple, mundane activity can be a great new experience for these young people. The committee have had many personal hosting/counselling experiences and are prepared to meet and discuss with those interested in supporting us. RYE is one of the great Rotary programmes established in 1929 and NZ is a favoured destination but we cannot accept students unless we have participating clubs and if we cannot welcome visitors we deny our NZ youth this wonderful opportunity. Talk to us. Duty of Outbounds prior to Departure You must attend briefings / orientations. You must meet all obligations time wise that are asked of you. We are organising a year overseas for you, and you need to do your part. It is not onerous. You must make the payments when required. You should learn the language of your host Country as best you can - take on extra lessons as the better you can communicate, the easier your path will be. Duty of Outbounds whilst Overseas Reporting back to New Zealand: The attached monthly report is to be completed and emailed to the Outbound Liaison on the RYE Committee on a monthly basis. This report is expected at the end of every month. You must follow the rules of the Exchange Partner. Failure to do so will initiate an early return home. |
